    Baccarat — The Complete Guide

Baccarat is seen as the casino's most sophisticated card game, but it is actually one of the simplest: you make no decisions during the hand, only choose who to bet on before the deal — Player, Banker or Tie. Everything else is fixed by the rules.

    How baccarat is played

You place a bet on one of three outcomes: Player, Banker or Tie. The dealer deals two cards to each side. The goal is to get closest to 9. Ace = 1, cards 2-9 at face value, 10/J/Q/K = 0. Totals are counted in single digits only — 7+8=15 counts as 5.

    The third-card rule

If either side has 8 or 9 ("Natural"), the hand stops. Otherwise: Player draws a third card on 0-5. Banker draws according to a fixed table that also depends on the card drawn by Player. You make no decision here — the dealer applies the rules automatically.

    Which bet is best

Banker — house edge 1.06% (including the 5% commission on wins). This is the best bet at the table.

Player — house edge 1.24%. Also perfectly reasonable.

Tie — pays 8:1 but carries a house edge of about 14.4%. A bad bet despite the tempting payout.

Side bets (Pairs, Perfect Pair) run 5%-11% house edge — best avoided.

Chasing patterns — Big Road and "scorecards"

Baccarat tables display pattern boards that tempt you to look for streaks. This is the gambler's fallacy in a polished form: every hand is statistically independent, and the patterns carry no predictive information. They are purely entertainment.

    Bankroll management in baccarat

Since the house edge is fixed and there is no skill element, bankroll management is the one thing truly in your control. Set a budget per session in advance, wager a fixed 1%-2% of that budget per hand, and avoid increasing bets after a loss ("Martingale") — a method that raises your risk of ruin without changing the house edge. Even after a long winning streak, every new hand is an independent event at a fixed probability.

    Baccarat vs poker

In baccarat there is no decision that affects the outcome beyond choosing which bet to place. If you're looking for a card game where every decision matters, poker is the answer — you can start with a free game or the Israeli club.
