Pot Odds — Calculation, Formula & Examples

Pot Odds = your call / (pot + your call)

Example: pot is $100. Opponent bets $50. To stay in you must call $50. Pot is now $150, and you invest another $50 — total $200. Your Pot Odds: 50/200 = 25%.

Meaning: as long as you have more than 25% chance to win the hand — calling is +EV. Less than 25% — fold.

After the flop you have two cards to come (turn and river). To find your Equity:

1. Count your Outs (cards that save you).
2. Multiply by 4 if both turn and river are still to come — or by 2 if only the river remains.

Example: Flush Draw = 9 outs. After the flop: 9×4 = 36%. After the turn: 9×2 = 18%.

Now compare to Pot Odds — if Equity is higher, call. If not, fold.

Pot Odds = what\'s in the pot now. Implied Odds = how much more you can extract from your opponent if you hit.

Example: you have a Flush Draw and need 25% to call, but only have 19%. Pot Odds say "fold". But if your opponent is deep-stacked and you know they\'ll pay you off on the river — Implied Odds flip the call to profitable.

• Counting a "tainted" out: a card completing your flush but also completing a straight for the opponent — not really an out.
• Forgetting the turn bet: if you plan to see the river, calculate Pot Odds for the whole way, not just the next card.
• Relying only on Pot Odds in Multiway: against 3 opponents your Equity drops. Pot odds give a partial picture.
