What is a preflop chart?

A chart that specifies which hands to open from every position at the table (UTG, MP, CO, BTN, SB, BB). The foundation of any solid, math-based poker strategy.

Why do opening ranges change by position?

The later the position, the fewer players can act behind you — so you can open more hands and often win the blinds without seeing a flop.

Do I have to memorize the whole chart?

Not all at once. Start with UTG and MP (most important not to over-open early). BTN comes more naturally to widen.

What's the difference between 6-max and 9-max charts?

In 9-max there are 3 additional early positions before CO, and opening ranges from early spots are tighter. In 6-max there's no UTG+1, UTG+2, LJ — less crowding and wider ranges.

How to read the chart

s = suited (same suit). o = offsuit (different suits).
Example: AKs = Ace-King suited. AKo = Ace-King offsuit.
77+ = every pocket pair from 77 up (77, 88, 99, TT, JJ, QQ, KK, AA).
ATs+ = every suited Ace-Ten or higher (ATs, AJs, AQs, AKs).

Adjustments by table type

Tight table (lots of folds): widen opening ranges by 3-5% in every position. More blind stealing.
Loose-Passive (limpers): tighten a touch, but Iso-Raise huge over limpers.
Aggressive (lots of 3-bets): tighten especially UTG/MP. Only bring "playable" hands.
Short-stack: Pure Push/Fold at 15BB and under. Use Nash Push/Fold charts.

Vs 3-Bet — defense ranges

UTG (tightest): 4-Bet only QQ+, AK. Call TT-JJ, AQs.
BTN vs BB 3-Bet: 4-Bet TT+, AK. Call suited connectors and mid pockets.
Fold everything else. Preflop discipline beats creativity.
