    3-Bet — Preflop Reraise

3-Bet (preflop reraise) is one of the strongest tools in modern preflop strategy. It builds bigger pots with premium hands, folds out marginal holdings, and forces opponents into tight ranges. In this guide you'll learn exactly what it is, when to apply it, what sizing to use, and how to balance Value + Bluff.

    What Exactly is a 3-Bet?

    Step 1: Blinds post (that\'s the 1-Bet).
    Step 2: A player opens with a raise — that\'s the 2-Bet.
    Step 3: Another player reraises — 3-Bet.
    Step 4: The original opener may 4-Bet, and if the 3-Bettor jams All-in it\'s a 5-Bet.

    Recommended 3-Bet Sizes

    • In Position (IP): ~3x the opener\'s size. e.g., Open to 3BB → 3-Bet to 9BB.
    • Out of Position (OOP): ~4x the opener\'s size. You pay an "OOP tax" — you need more money to build the pot.
    • Vs Limpers (Squeeze): Open + number of Limpers × bet size. e.g., 2 limpers and a 3BB opener → 12-13BB.

    3-Bet Ranges — Value & Bluff

Value: QQ+, AK. Always. This is the core.

Bluff (semi-bluff): hands that win when folded to but have equity when called — low Axs (A5s, A4s, A3s), 76s, 65s.

Ideal ratio: ~40% Value / 60% Bluff from late positions. From BB — more Value since you play OOP.

How to Respond to a 3-Bet

    • 4-Bet Value: QQ+, AK. Always reraise with these.
    • 4-Bet Bluff: A2s-A5s (blockers to AA/AK). ~30% of 4-Bet range.
    • Call: TT-JJ, AQs, KQs, middle suited connectors — play postflop.
    • Fold everything else. Muck AQo, AJo, KQo from most positions — insufficient equity vs a 3-Bet range.

    Common 3-Bet Mistakes

    • 3-Betting only AA-KK-AK: unbalanced range. Smart opponents will fold everything to you and steal the blinds.
    • 3-Bet Bluff with "trash": 72o isn\'t a Bluff-3Bet. Pick hands with potential.
    • Cold-4-Bet Bluff too often: extremely dangerous. Opponent 4-Bet range is already very strong.
