GTO vs Exploitative Poker — When to Use Each Style

The dilemma of every advanced player

The moment you move past "I know how to play poker" and reach "I want to make money at poker," you run into the great dilemma of modern poker: play GTO or Exploitative? The answer, like a lot of things in poker, is: it depends.

What is GTO?

GTO (Game Theory Optimal) is a "mathematically perfect" style of play — a strategy that cannot be beaten in the long run, but also doesn't necessarily maximize profit against weak opponents. The idea: you use mixed strategies in a way that no opponent can exploit you. Players use solvers like PioSolver and GTO Wizard to learn the standards.

What is Exploitative play?

Exploitative play is the opposite — you identify the specific weaknesses of the opponent in front of you, and maximize profit by adjusting your playing style in a targeted way. Opponent folds too much? Bluff them. Opponent calls everything? Only make value bets. Opponent opens too many hands? Find more hands to play against them.

Which approach fits ClubGG?

At most ClubGG tables — especially low and mid stakes — Exploitative play is better. The reason is simple: the players aren't playing GTO, so there's no reason for you to play GTO against them. Exploit their mistakes. Save GTO for high stakes or opponents you know are experienced.

• Micro Stakes (₪1–5 BB): 100% Exploitative
• Low Stakes (₪10–50 BB): 80% Exploitative, 20% GTO baseline
• Mid Stakes (₪100+ BB): 50/50 — depends on the opponent
• High Stakes: GTO by default, deviate only against a known opponent

How do you learn GTO without losing your mind?

There's no need to memorize giant charts. Start with 5 basic concepts: Pot Odds, Equity, Range vs Range, MDF (Minimum Defense Frequency), and Bluff-to-Value Ratio. These will give you 80% of the benefit of GTO for 20% of the effort.
