Many players believe that online poker means no tells. That is wrong. Instead of body language, you have timing, bet sizing, quick action choices (Snap-Call, Auto-Check), use of Sit-Out, and even the avatar the opponent picks. Skilled players read this like an open book.

10 critical online tells

This list is based on research from GTO Wizard, PokerCoaching, and databases of millions of hands.

• Snap-Call on a big pot — usually a medium hand that does not want to think
• Long timebank + Call — a marginal hand, close to folding
• Long timebank + Raise — usually a value bet, not a bluff
• Unusual bet sizing (75%+ pot) — polarized (nuts or bluff)
• Min-raise — almost always a monster hand (value)
• Overbet on the river — usually a bluff or the nuts, almost never a medium hand
• Snap-fold to a 3bet — a weak hand, exploit it against this opponent
• Changed avatar / odd name — usually a new or non-serious player
• Frequent Sit-Out — tilted, psychologically weak
• Auto-Check on the flop — no connection to the board, bluff the river

Timing tells — the gold of online poker

The time it takes an opponent to make a decision is the most important tell online. An instant action means a pre-planned range (auto-pilot). A slow action means a tough hand, a real decision. Professional players deliberately use even timing to hide information.

How to protect yourself from being "read"

Tells go both ways — you are also broadcasting information.

• Use a consistent timebank — not only when you have a hard decision
• Vary your bet sizing — not always 2/3 pot
• Do not snap-fold — always take 2 seconds
• Play with a HUD but do not stare — opponents notice HUD-style play
