In Texas Hold'em, with seven cards available, the odds of a Royal Flush are about 1 in 30,940, and the odds of any Straight Flush (including Royal) are about 1 in 3,590. In table terms: a player who plays 100 hands per hour will see a Royal Flush on average about once every 300 hours of play.

Where the numbers come from

In five random cards there are 2,598,960 possible combinations. Of those, only 4 are Royal Flushes and 36 are Straight Flushes. In Hold'em you see seven cards, so the odds improve, but it is still the rarest hand in the game — which is exactly why it sits at the top of the ranking.

When you have a draw — how many outs you really have

A Straight Flush draw is the strongest draw in the game because it wins even when it doesn't complete.

• Open-ended Straight Flush draw: 15 outs (about 54% by the river)
• Regular Flush draw: 9 outs (about 35% by the river)

How to play a Straight Flush draw

With such a strong draw, playing passively is burning money. An aggressive semi-bluff is recommended: you profit both when your opponent folds and when they call and you complete your hand. Building the pot early is what turns the rare hand into real profit when it actually lands.

A classic mistake — playing the rare hand out of fear

Players who complete a Royal Flush tend to bet too small, worried the opponent will fold. In reality, a small pot on a hand that happens once every 300 hours is a huge long-term loss. Correct pricing: a normal continuation bet, then full value on the river.
