Three of a Kind ("trips" or "set") is 3 cards of the same rank plus 2 kickers. A solid hand that beats two pair and below but loses to a straight and above.

There are two kinds of three-of-a-kind in Hold'em: Set — you hold a pocket pair and a third card of that rank hits the board. Trips — one card in your hand and two of that rank on the board. Sets are much stronger because they're hidden.
A set is a silent knight — beautiful in stealth. Slowplay the flop, value bet the turn and river. With trips (paired board + your card), play cautiously: opponents can hold two pair or better, or roll into a full house.
