Poker Tournament Strategy — Full MTT Playbook

Tournaments are a completely different game from Cash. Blinds go up every 15 minutes, your stack shrinks relative to the pot, and you can't rebuy. This guide covers every MTT stage — from deep Early play to the shallow ICM-heavy Final Table — including a Push/Fold chart by stack size, common bubble mistakes, and strategy for Bounty and Re-entry formats.

    Stage 1 — Early (100+ BB)

Deep stacks, time to play. Treat it like a Cash Game: standard opens, board-based C-Bets, no ICM pressure. Don't risk your whole stack with marginal hands. Goal: patiently accumulate chips and identify the fish before they bust.

    Stage 2 — Middle (40-100 BB)

Blinds start to hurt. Stealing from the Button and CO becomes crucial. 3-Bet Bluff with blockers (Axs). Don't play deep Set-Mining — implied odds weaken. See opening chart.

    Stage 3 — Bubble

The most important moment in the tournament. Everyone wants to make the money. Mid-stacks play super tight — you can steal all the blinds. Rule of thumb:

    • Big Stack: Maximum aggression. Pressure the Medium Stacks.
    • Short Stack: Pure Push/Fold by chart.
    • Medium Stack: Be careful. Don't play big pots without the nuts.

    Push/Fold — Quick Chart (BB / All-In)

    • 15 BB: Push 22+, A2s+, A9o+, KTs+, KJo+, QTs+, JTs (~15%)
    • 10 BB: Push 22+, A2+, K5s+, K9o+, Q9s+, QTo+, J9s+, T9s (~22%)
    • 7 BB: Push 22+, A2+, K2s+, K7o+, Q6s+, Q9o+, J8s+ (~30%)
    • 5 BB: Push any pair, any Ace, any King, any Suited (~45%)
    • 3 BB: Push Any Two (maybe skip 72o, 82o)

See also ICM for a Final Table adjusted chart.

    Final Table + ICM

Every pay jump here is worth hundreds or thousands. ICM says: don't risk against the Big Stack without a monster. Avoid flips against the Big Stack unless the price is huge. Other Short Stacks? Pressure them — they're fighting for ICM. See full ICM guide.

    Bounty & KO Tournaments

In Bounty formats (like ClubGG PKO), every knocked-out player adds cash. That changes the math: call all-ins wider because you're also playing for the bounty. Rule of thumb: Bounty = 20% of opponent stack → widen calling range by 3–5%.
