The structural difference: against the house vs. against players
In every classic casino game you play against the house, and the house has a mathematical edge built into the rules that cannot be changed. In poker the house doesn't participate in the game — it takes a rake from the pot, and the money moves between the players. The expected loss is calculated as the average bet times the number of hands per hour times the house edge. 10 ILS on European Roulette at 60 spins per hour costs about 16 ILS per hour. The same 10 ILS on a fast slot with 500 spins per hour and 94% RTP costs about 300 ILS per hour. The exact same bet, 18 times the cost.
Where the rake fits in poker
In poker the cost is the rake — usually 5% of the pot up to a cap, and a percentage of the buy-in in tournaments. It's a fixed cost that comes off your profit, but it is not a mathematical edge against you: a player who beats the table by more than the rake stays profitable. Rakeback programs reduce this cost even further.
What this means in practice
If you're looking for quick entertainment with no effort — a casino gives you exactly that, at a known cost. If you're looking for a game where learning improves your results — poker is the only choice in that category.
