Why most people never really learn poker
They watch videos instead of practicing. Learning poker works like learning a language: a little theory, lots of repetition, and immediate feedback. The plan below is built on just 45 minutes a day — 30 minutes of play and 15 minutes of review.
Week 1 — rules and mechanics
The goal: never again wonder "what is happening right now". You need to know hand rankings, betting round structure, and table positions by heart.
- Days 1–2: Texas Hold'em rules and betting rounds
- Days 3–4: memorize the 10 hand rankings, including kickers
- Day 5: positions — UTG, MP, CO, BTN, SB, BB
- Days 6–7: 200 hands in play money, no pressure
Week 2 — hand selection and reading opponents
You move from "what do I have" to "what could they have". Start with a simple preflop chart, and practice assigning your opponent a range instead of a single hand.
- A preflop opening chart by position — and don't deviate from it
- Identify three opponent types: tight, loose-passive, aggressive
- Log every hand where you hesitated more than 10 seconds
Week 3 — useful math
You do not need to be a mathematician. You need three tools: outs, pot odds, and the 2/4 rule. If you have 9 outs to a flush on the flop, you complete it about 35% of the time by the river — and that is all you need to decide whether a call is profitable.
- Counting outs within 3 seconds
- The 2/4 rule for a quick percentage estimate
- Pot odds: what you pay versus what is in the pot
- Basic EV — why a correct decision can still lose a hand
Week 4 — review, tilt, and bankroll
This is the week that turns an amateur into a player. Every session ends with 3 marked hands you analyze: what was their range, what did I do, what would I do again. In parallel, you build bankroll rules and a hard stop-loss.
