Why there's a house edge in roulette at all
A European wheel has 37 pockets but the payout on a single number is 35:1 — as if there were only 36. That gap is exactly 2.70%, and it exists on every type of bet on the table: single number, red/black, dozen or column. There is no bet where the edge disappears.
Martingale — doubling after every loss
The idea: double your bet after every loss to win it all back on a single win. The problem is the table limit and a finite bankroll. Starting from a 10 ILS bet, a streak of 8 losses requires 2,560 ILS on the next spin and 5,120 ILS after that. Such streaks happen regularly, and they wipe out hundreds of small wins in one shot.
D'Alembert, Fibonacci and Labouchere
All of these methods only change the order and size of the bets. The expected value of a sum of bets is the sum of the expected values — and each one is negative by 2.7%. Changing the order cannot turn a sum of negative numbers into a positive one. This isn't an opinion, it's a result of the linearity of expectation.
The gambler's fallacy
After 7 reds in a row, it feels like black "must" come up. The wheel has no memory: the odds of black remain exactly 18/37. Believing in streaks is the main reason for betting too big after a losing run — which makes it more dangerous than the edge itself.
What you can actually do
You can't win, but you can reduce the damage: choose French or European roulette, prefer outside bets that extend the session, set a budget and time limit in advance, and don't increase bets after a loss. And if what draws you is the mathematics — in poker you can actually use it to build a real edge.
