Satellite Tournaments — Win Seats to Bigger Events

    What is a satellite?

A satellite is a small tournament whose prize is a ticket into a bigger tournament. Instead of paying $10,000 directly for the WSOP Main Event, you can win a $100 satellite and receive the ticket. The number of seats is set in advance (say, 10 seats to the WSOP), and everyone who finishes in the Top 10 gets a ticket — regardless of whether they finish 1st or 10th.

Why does it change the game?

This is a unique type of tournament: the goal is not to win 1st place, but simply to be within the top N spots. That changes all the calculations — especially near the end. A smart player plays differently at a satellite bubble than at a regular MTT bubble.

    Satellite strategy — 5 principles

    • Early stage: play classic and tight — build a stack without excessive risk
    • Middle stage: raise aggression against short stacks who already "see" the ticket
    • Bubble stage: this is the critical phase. An average stack or above — don't risk anything!
    • Hands like AK and QQ can become folds against a chip leader shoving all-in
    • A short stack on the bubble must play aggressively before the blinds swallow it

ICM and satellites — why it's critical

ICM (Independent Chip Model) calculates the value of chips as a prize. In a satellite, the most important thing to know is that there are moments when AA should be folded heads-up against a chip leader — because winning all the chips gives nothing beyond the ticket, while losing means elimination. It feels wrong but it is mathematically correct. A full ICM guide is at /icm-poker.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Should you fold AA on a satellite bubble?
It depends on the stacks. With an average stack above the blinds — yes, in a specific situation against a chip leader shoving all-in. It's mathematically correct even if it's hard to believe.
What if you win a ticket but don't want to play?
On GGPoker you can usually "roll" the ticket into the next satellite or receive equivalent T$ (Tournament Dollars). The club agent explains how.
Can you really reach the WSOP from $10?
Theoretically yes, through a chain of 4-5 satellites. In practice it requires luck and skill. Real stories like this happen almost every WSOP year.
