What Is Spin & Gold?
Spin & Gold is GGPoker's fastest format: a 3-player SNG tournament with a starting stack of 500 chips, blinds rising every 3 minutes. Before play begins, a random jackpot spin determines the prize multiplier: x2, x5, x25, x120, and in rare cases x2,500 or even x10,000 of the buy-in. Average game length: 5-8 minutes.
The Math Behind the Multiplier
The vast majority of games (~75%) land on a x2 multiplier. This means the winner takes the entire pot (2x the buy-in), while the others get nothing. In higher multipliers (x25 and above), the prize is split (50% for 1st, 30% for 2nd, 20% for 3rd), or in some cases split evenly. The implication: in x2 games you must win outright, but in x25+ games, finishing 2nd or 3rd is also worthwhile.
Preflop Strategy by Structure
With a starting stack of only 25BB, push/fold decisions begin almost immediately. Key principles:
- On your first or second hand — never limp. It's either a raise (2.5x) or a fold
- CO/BTN — open 55-60% of hands, including pocket pairs, high cards, and suited connectors
- SB — 3-bet or fold. Don't let the BB see a flop for free
- BB — defend widely, especially against a small open, around 45%+
- Under 15BB — go into full push/fold mode based on Nash charts
ICM in Spin & Gold
At a x2 multiplier, there is no ICM — you're either 1st or nothing. Play linearly. At a x25+ multiplier, there are meaningful jumps between 3rd and 2nd, and between 2nd and 1st. Implication: when you're very short at a high multiplier, it's worth waiting for a slightly better hand than you would in a regular x2 game — the gap between $0 and 3rd place is bigger.
Mistakes That Sink Players
The biggest enemy of a Spin & Gold player is impatience and frustration. Common mistakes:
- Opening too many hands from early position (EP) — there's no room to maneuver with only 25BB
- Insisting on flat-calling — the stack is too small; almost everything should be push or fold
- Defending the blinds with weak hands — the price against the open is too small to justify it
- Avoiding 3-bet all-in — at 12-18BB, it's your most powerful tool
Bankroll Management for Spin & Gold
Variance in this format is extreme because of the rare multipliers. Recommendation: 100+ buy-ins for your level, and mentally prepare for downswings of 40-60 buy-ins, which are completely normal. A winning player typically produces an ROI of 3-6% on average, and the impact of a high multiplier can dramatically affect a month's statistics.
