An ante is a small, compulsory bet that all players at the table contribute to the pot before any cards are dealt. Unlike blinds, which are only posted by two players, an ante ensures that every player has a stake in the pot from the outset. This mechanism is frequently used in later stages of poker tournaments to accelerate action and prevent passive play by creating a larger starting pot to fight for.
